What You'll Learn: PSDG Course Breakdown
PSDG Introduction
This module is an introductory video from data governance trainer and industry leader, Kathy Rondon. Kathy gives a brief definition of data governance and an overview of the course topics. The video also discusses scoping a data governance program and explains key differences between data governance in the private and public sectors.
Module 1: Metadata Management, Reference, and Master Data
This module explores data governance concepts and terminology related to metadata, reference data, and master data. Topics covered include: the purpose of metadata, type of metadata standards, and enabling data discovery. The module also covers the distinctions between metadata, reference, and master data, as well as exploring the concept of Master Data Management.
Module 2: Data Governance Roles and Responsibilities
This module defines the various roles within a data governance program to include Chief Data Officers (CDO), Data Owners, Data Stewards, Curators, and Custodians and how those roles relate to the Data Lifecycle. Topics include: differences between public and private sector CDOs, the history of public sector CDOs, and the interaction between Data Owners and Data Stewards, and more.
Module 3: Legal and Regulatory Environment
This module explores various laws and regulations that impact public sector data governance. Topics include: the overarching goal of public sector data governance, the goals of right to information laws and open data policies, the information system and sharing requirements of various laws (e.g., the Federal Information Security Management Act, the Health Insurance Portability Act, US Privacy Act), and differentiating between the public’s right to know and the government’s need to protect sensitive data.
Module 4: Key Data Governance Deliverables
This module discusses the drivers of instituting a data governance program and the key deliverables involved in data governance. Topics include: a Data Strategy and its purpose, a discussion of the Federal Data Strategy, Data Asset Inventories, Strategic Communication Plans, and Privacy Impact Assessments. The module will also explore Data Discovery and Data Quality as deliverables, as well as Retention Schedules, Disaster Recovery Plans, and the five levels of Data Management Maturity.
Module 5: Data Security
This final module explores key concepts of data security in the context of public sector data governance. Topics include: threats to data security and how to address them, the CIA data triad of information security, and access control regimes. The module will discuss in depth the various types of access control (e.g., Mandatory, Role-based, Attribute-based, Policy-based) and the concept of “Zero Trust” architecture.
Course Completion: After Course Survey and Certification Testing
Upon completion, you will receive an email with a post-course survey link and instructions on how to proceed with setting up a proctored testing date for ICCP to certification. The registration price includes one certification attempt.
